Being overwhelmed can happen to everyone, even the hardest workers you know. If you’re not careful, the weight of your agenda could drag you down and create more problems than it solves. While you could power through, this is usually counterproductive, and you’d be better served by taking a moment to step back, breathe, and perform a micro-reset.

Why Micro-Resets Work

A short break can often be enough to help you moderate your body’s cortisol, which is the hormone that enables your body’s fight-or-flight response. This also gives your brain more time to process information. When you and your team can better moderate these stressors, you can be more productive, which opens the floodgates for creative thought and innovative solutions to new or ongoing problems.

How You Can Use Micro-Resets

Need a few tips for a brief break? Try these out:

  • Consider existing habits and add a reset into them. Sometimes you might get up for a snack or use the restroom throughout the day. Consider if you can build a micro-reset into this habit. Remember, it takes consistency to build a new habit, so with a few minor adjustments, you can turn your existing habits into a micro-reset, reaping the benefits in the process.
  • Remind yourself it’s time for a reset. The goal with any habit is to get to the point where you do it on autopilot and it doesn’t require so much brain bandwidth or willpower. Until you get to this point, consider using sticky notes or phone reminders to ensure you don’t miss out on opportunities for micro-resets.
  • Buddy up for accountability. As is the case with any goal, accountability goes a long way and makes building a habit significantly easier. Find a coworker who can help you stick to this new habit and support each other along the way. Don’t forget to report to each other, too; that’s how accountability becomes most effective.
